Introduction
Everyone needs to get into
the search engines but a lot of affiliates do not take search
engines seriously. Most do not take them seriously because
they do not know how to get listed. Some are worried that
they will not rank and thus do not wish to get listed. But
search engines account for over 80% of all visits to websites
and therefore we can do nothing but take them seriously.
Once Upon a Time
Not so long ago, you had to submit to the search engines in order to get into them, but now things have changed as search engines crawl your site.
Optimize First

It is still importnat however to optimize your site and to set up your title, keywords and description.
The title
should be the product you are trying to sell. Most search
engines do not like titles to be over 57 characters long.
The description
should be a description of what you are trying to sell. This
can be 150 characters long.
The keywords
should be the keywords and phrases that your your customers
will use to search for your products. Think of all the search
terms that your customers might use and try to list them.
It is better to use a few selective keywords and phrases that describe your site as much as possible rather than too many. Do not repeat words as it may be considered as spam.
The title,
keywords, description play a major factor on how you
rank. If the same keywords are found in all three and this describes your content accurately you are likely to rank better.
So the words that you choose for the title and desciption
are of utmost importance - you do not have many character
options to choose the wrong ones. Many people choose to use
their company name in their title. This is OK for very large
companies that are household names but for Joe Blogs - nobody
knows him. If your company is unknown do not waste it in your
title. Rather focus on particular keywords that might be used
to search for your products.
The content of your webpage
should be interesting and unique. Some of the keywords that
you use can be noticed in the content and thus importance
is gained. The more importnat your site, the higher it is
likely to be ranked.
How to Get into the Search Engines Quickly
As submission is no longer involved, getting into the search engines can be considered easier, but infact it is not. You still have to do a lot of work and you still have to continue your work to do well.
Somethings that are easier is that you can now create sitemaps so that the searchengines know more about your site. It is still important however to make sure that all your pages link together.
There are many tools on the internet that help you to create sitemaps. If you are on a linux server and have a minimum of python 2 and have access to cron you could use the google sitemap generator which is very good because it updates and pings to google everyday. On the otherhand if you do not have a linux server or python 2 or access to cron, you can consider third party sitemaps.
Once you do this, open an account under google webmaster tools and add your sitemap or sitemaps there.
It is now been agreed by the major search engines - google, yahoo and msn to use the same sitemap protocol and you can now include it in your robots text as follows:
|
# Robots.txt file for http://www.yourname.com
/ User-agent: *
sitemap: http://www.youname.com/sitemap.xml
sitemap: http://www.yourname.com/sitemap1.xml
sitemap: http://www.yourname.com/sitemap2.xml
|
This way, the search engines will know that your sitemap exists and will know where to look for it.
Once you have created your sitemap and robots txt
The title of the previous topic was how to get into the search engines fast and I aim to get to that now. There are three very good ways that I can think of that will help you to get into the search engines fast and these are as follows:
- Get a link to a high page ranking site. This is often very difficult because high page ranking sites do not usually want to link to you, but it is not impossible. You could try to link to the following. You could get into search engines like google (which are noramlly very slow) as early as 24hrs to 48hrs .

- If you can write - particularly about your site and your products - you could try to set up a blog. Blogs get into search engines quciker because they are contantly updated. If you lik yourt blog to your main site, it will get into search engines qucikly too. Blogs can get you in the search engines as qucikly as 48hours.
- Like blogs press releases are also a very good way to get into search engines, but there are free methods and paid methods to submit a press release. I have used the following which I find extremely good because it submits to the search engines news centres. Press Release
The Importance of Links
We have seen how links from high ranking sites can get you into the search engines very quickly, but links are eseentially more importn at than that. Apart from optimizing your site links actually help you to get a high rank yourself. The greater the number of links, the more related the links are to your site and the importance of the sites that link to you, ie how many good links they have to, can make the difference of a low and high rank. But the search engines nowadays do not like cheating and os if you try to generate links from link farms or FFA sites, you might end up being penalised instaed of rewarded.
Relevant Recipricol Links are very important. The more relevant links you have the greater the chance that you pages will be ranked highly. Some search engines also rank the importance of links. So if your links are popular, it is quite likely that you page is popular too. Links can be exchanged. A relevant link might be a hardware store selling plumbing equipment who is linked to a a website of a plumber or plumbing service. Both offer service to each other and are relevant to each others business and thus ranking is likely to increase. Personally I do not like to advertise other people, but this ofcourse puts me at a disadvantage.
So the best thing to do is to submit to the directories esepcially yahoo and dmoz, but other free and paid directories too. Increasing your Chances Make sure you use different
keywords, titles and desciptions for all your pages. If you
have 8 pages it means you can fit 57 x 8 characters in your
8 titles. This increases you exposure to more keywords and
phrases and increases your chance of being seen.

How to Submit to Directories
Major
indexes or directories such as DMoz and Yahoo
require manual submission
and take a very long time to get into. Be patient! It is really
worth it. There are other indexes that you should go to as
well. It is worth the wait getting into major indexes because
a lot of search engines will take the listings up and it will
thus increase proliferation, which in busines terms means
greater exposure.
First make sure your page
is properly optimized as described above. Make sure you do
not submit duplicate pages also. Then go through the directory
and choose catergories that are relevant to you. Continue
upwards until you reach the most suitable catergory. Try to
ensure that the catergory you have chosen is the final destination
you can go to and also try to ensure that it is a fitting
description of what you offer. Try to ensure that the catergory
you choose to register under is well populated and that there
is not only one or two sites there.
It will take quite a long
time to get listed in yahoo or dmoz so you should submit to other directoreis as well which can list you as early as 24 hours. If your site
is unique and fits the suggestions as specified above it is
more likely to be accepted. Affiliate sites do not get registered
at all because they are duplicates of the promoter sites.
So you a need your own website to promote affilate programs. You can try the following if you want a reasonably priced hosting service that offers a great deal more than some very high priced ones.

When you compare free with
paid, it is quite obvious you get a lot more if you pay. But
that's enough about web hosting. I mentioned them before and
therefore would like to get back to point.
Getting listed in as many
directories as possible is very important because search engines
will start to take them up. Google feeds over 120 search engines
and Yahoo is not far behind.
You can register with Yahoo
and DMoz for free, but Yahoo also has a paid service. Dmoz
takes about a year to get into and perhaps upto another year
for search engines to take them up but it is well worth the
wait because your webpages will be well proliferated.
Professional
Help
Definitely I would say that
professional help is what most people need, but professional
help can be very expensive especially if you have a lot of
pages and want to get proliferated in the search engines.
Beware however that it is quite easy to get listed at the
No. 1 as ABCinc. because there might not be any other company
with the same name. Nobody might know ABCinc. and therefore
it is highly unlikely that anyone will search for it. It would
be a total waste of time and I have known of so called professionals
who have obtained several top 10 listings which have no use
to the website owner merely to show how great they are. This
is a way of cheating at ones profession. Fortunately most
professionals act professionally.
You can always choose a professional
service where you have some control. I suggest search engine
